Zazen Boys

May 1, 2012 in General, Music

WIKI:

Number Girl (ナンバーガール Nanbā Gāru?) was a rock band formed in Fukuoka, Japan in August, 1995 by guitarist and vocalist Mukai Shutoku. They disbanded in 2002 following bassist Nakao Kentarou’s departure from the band.

Number Girl played fast, guitar-driven rock similar to the Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Hüsker Dü. Over the course of seven years their sound evolved greatly, serving as a basis for Mukai’s post-Number Girl project, Zazen Boys.

Zazen Boys is a Japanese band formed by former Number Girl guitarist and vocalist Mukai Shutoku. Stylistically, their music consists mostly of complex rhythmic songs reminiscent of math rock, as well as extended improvisational songs characterized through live performances

A Bond With Sorrow – Christoph de Babalon

April 20, 2012 in Music

I’ve been a huge fan of Christoph de Babalon and basically everything he’s put out for many years now. He’s nailed down a particular style of breakcore and dark ambient that just cannot be touched. In a genre full of messy and erratic drum programming, the steady precision in his tracks really set them apart. I’ve recently been tracking down some of his more elusive releases and was surprised tonight to see a new album releasing in 3 days on Kid606′s label Tigerbeat6. This new release sees CdB letting up on the heavier drums and amens, and leaning more into the illbient side of things.

D-Trash Records

April 19, 2012 in Music

I’ve been getting into some of the many DHR releases I’ve missed over the years and came across this similar label, D-Trash. They put up all of their releases online for free download with the option to purchase. I’ve only had a chance to listen to a bit so far, but what I’ve heard is pretty interesting stuff and definitely worth checking out. Styles ranging from pure noise to dark ambient, breakcore, grindcore and power electronics. Its not often a label releases an entire catalogue of this quality for free- looks like I’ll be busy downloading for a while.

D-Trash release page with download links – Album downloads available under the heading “Full Length MP3 Releases (with artwork)”

Formed in 1998, Canada’s D-Trash Records started as an online collective by members of Cpuwar and DJ Rabies as the beginnings of an international network of electronic music artists.

In 2000, the group formed into an official record label, headed by D-Trash artist Schizoid, the label now releasing professionally pressed CD releases for sale in stores; as well, continuing the practice of putting full-length albums online for free MP3 download, along with full artwork.

The label’s material was picked up for a North American distribution deal with infamous German label Digital Hardcore Recordings. Many artists recording for D-Trash Records have some kind of tie to the Digital Hardcore style of music, known for its extreme combinations of electronic, punk, metal and noise music elements, and the label has become known for its championing of the genre.

New Squarepusher track/album

April 12, 2012 in Music

New track/video release from the forthcoming album, Ufabulum

“For a while I had apocalyptic nightmares about trails of nuclear missiles in the night sky. So I aimed to recreate that strange combination of exhilaration, terror and sadness both visually and emotionally through this piece. It lead to the idea of a spacecraft leaving earth at vast speed to escape, but oddly the music also made me think of it flying through a library. So I generated the visual aspect such that, as the piece progresses, it seems as if the viewer is ever accelerating through massive corridors of books.”

Interviews with Alec Empire, ATR Live & DHR Classics

April 10, 2012 in Music

I came across the electronic music site solipsistic NATION today and, after looking around a bit, was delighted to see these two shows with Alec Empire. Topics discussed include some background history for the Digital Hardcore Recordings label, the inspirations behind the development of DHR, workings with other artists and Atari Teenage Riot. I would encourage everyone to check out the solipsistic NATION site as well, as I’m sure there’s plenty of interesting shows & information for everyone.

3:33 (Parallel Thought)

April 10, 2012 in Music

Whoa…

http://www.pthought.com/333.html

Too frequently, experimental music has automatically fallen under the generic label of “new” or “different”. Perhaps what is needed is a return to primitive principles, a devolution of sorts. 3:33 is a group that looks to do just that. Evolving from the groundwork of Musique Concrete composers like Pierre Shaeffer and John Cage, their music is tense and fiercely experiential; a roller coaster ride through moody beats, haunting jangles, and shrieks that will disquiet the soul. Their sounds are otherworldly, guttural, deeply primal, and sometimes mad; 3:33 masterfully brings this motley of noises into communion, and the listener is transported into a world of dark imaginings. Whether entrancing the listener with bone rocking percussion or sending shivers down the spine, the music spins itself seamlessly together into a masterpiece of purposeful chaos. Spinning wild tales, opening trap doors, and shedding light into dark recesses of the soul, the soundscape ultimately leaves the listener with a sense of unnamable disquietude. 3:33 shrouds its identity in mystery, letting the music speak for itself. 3:33 will introduce the world to a new style of music altogether, pushing the boundaries of experimentation by sending their audience into an abyss of musical discord.”
